"Dragonfly" by Marguerite E. Cyr
Marguerite Eugenia Cyr was born and raised in Hollis, LI, NY. She
graduated from Hunter College in 1937 with a BS in Art and Mathematics. She
married Roland F. Cyr, a store manager for Montgomery Wards, and moved frequently, finally settling in Hagerstown, MD in 1959. Together they raised their 4 children- Larry, Virginia, Laura and Marguerite and have 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Her contributions to the art community of Washington County were numerous. She served as a docent for the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, taught the portrait class at the YMCA for 17 years as well as art and math at St. Maria Goretti HS. She was
co-creator of the History of Washington County mural that once hung at the Alexander House, a member of the Valley Art Association, co-founder of The Mansion House Art Center,
as well as a member of Spectrum Seven art group. She had a true passion for art and worked mostly in watercolor and oil. She loved painting landscapes, still life and portraits. While teaching, she developed an interest in ceramics and dabbled in other mediums. She attended many workshops and traveled to study with other artists learning new techniques along the way.
In addition to art, volunteerism defined her. Mrs. Cyr had a lifetime involvement in the Girl Scouts which began as a young scout herself. She served as a troop leader, a member of the Board of Directors of the Girl Scout Council of Hagerstown, and became the first president of the merger which created the Shawnee Girl Scout Council.
While volunteering for the Red Cross, she managed the volunteer program, ran the military hotline and was a member of the Board of Directors, Chapter chair and Honorary Lifetime Board Member of the Red Cross.
She raised funds for the United Way and March of Dimes and was a
recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award by Washington County, the Book of Golden Deeds Award from the Hagerstown Exchange Club and the Zonta Woman of the Year Award and Woman of Distinction Award in 2010 for her many contributions over the years.
She was a member of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church.
