Lucy has always enjoyed sketching and observing nature's beauty, shapes, shadows, reflections and atmospheric changes while growing up in farming area of Frederick County, MD. Years later as family matured, Lucy started art classes and workshops while still working full time in her nursing career. Now, many years later, Lucy is still very much involved with painting through Valley Art Association of Hagerstown, MD, using her God given talent.
Today Lucy still loves and remains a watercolorist as her medium. The transparency and spontaneity shows in her paintings. Lucy does exhibit in juried shows and has garnered awards.
Lucy's paintings are available for purchase at the Mansion House Art Gallery in Hagerstown, MD City Park or feel free to contact Lucy.

On the verge of changing to a fine arts major in college, the practical side of my nature prevailed, and thus I managed to avoid a lifetime of starvation. Eventually, however, the need to create reemerged, and I resumed painting seriously in 1997. I now work in pastels, watercolor, and oil. I find I am drawn to offbeat subjects and interesting shapes, or unusual aspects of more ordinary subjects. I am particularly intrigued by the challenges of perspective.
I have studied watercolor techniques with Irene Sylvester, Frank Webb (AWS), and Kent Roberts, and oil painting with David Buckley Good of the Schuler School of Fine Art, Patt Legg, Marie McCafferty, and have attended a variety of other workshops. Generally, I subscribe to the notion that the best way to learn to paint is to paint, and I paint every day.
I have done commissions (people and pet portraits, and homes) and have been engaged in the shameless commerce side of art in order to support my need to paint.
My initial foray into competitive exhibition resulted in a "Best in Show" for a watercolor portrait shown at the 2006 Morgan County Fair. I have since participated in other juried exhibits, including the annual Valley Art Association show at the Washington County Museum of Fine Art (Hagerstown, MD), the Cumberland Valley Exhibit at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, The Ice House (Berkeley Springs, WV), and the Washington County Arts Council. I have exhibited at various other venues, including the Valley Art Association's (VAA) Mansion House Gallery (Hagerstown, MD) (juried, ongoing), Hagerstown Bluesfest, Hagerstown's Fall Festival, the Washington County Hospital's 'Art in the Hallway' program, several restaurants, Art in the Park (Berkeley Springs, WV), the Washington County Agricultural Exhibition (Grand Champion, 2009), and the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center (WV).
I am an active member of two artists' organizations: the Valley Art Association (President, 2009-10), and the Potomac River Artists Guild.

My inspiration to become an artist was visits to the Fine Arts Museum in Hagerstown as a child. This was the seed that started my 40 plus year career as a professional artist. I believe that studying with those whose work inspire you, keeps the juices flowing and your passion alive. I started this journey with intense study with many notable professional artists from around the country in the 80's. Locally with Wilma Shearer and Lester Stone, Nationally Denise Burns of Catalina Island CA, Ron Reddick of Tucson AZ. I studed at the Schuler School of Fine Arts Baltimore MD for 8 years with Ann Didusch Schuler, Andrew Guerin, Hans Schuler Guerin and David Buckley Good. I was asked how many artist/teachers have you studied with, I started a list that reached more than 20, some years taking as many 7 classes a week for over 10 year span.
Shows: Solo portrait show Jan, 1993 at the Fine Arts Museum Hagerstown, MD, one of those portraits is now in the permanent collection of the museum. Several Cumberland Valley Shows and many invitational shows at the same museum over the last 35 years. Other venues: University of Maryland - Hagerstown, Strathmore Fine Art Gallery, Shippensburg University, and solo show at the Delaplaine Art Gallery Frederick MD, solo show at the Washington Co Arts Council. This is a very short list of solo shows or group shows, well over70 shows. I began teaching at the Fine Arts Museum in 1994 and continued at various locations in the tri-state area as well as private lessons and critiques. I have been asked to be guest speaker at various clubs, art associations, as well as guest demo artist through the years.
A Founder of the Artisans Connection, In 2013 I was the Lead Curator for the highly successful Destination Arts initiative for the Arts Alliance of Greater Waynesboro (AAGW). After that I started up and became Curator/Gallery Director of Gallery 50 for the AAGW. During my 5 years as curator and director I represented over 300 artist and artisans. I am a founding member of the Mansion House Gallery and the inspiration Tuesday painting group for the VAA. My memberships have included: a certified member of the Maryland Society of Portrait Artists, a juried member of the Oil Painters of America, juried member of the Charcoal Club of Baltimore MD, the Washington Co. Arts Council and the VAA. I belonged to several other art clubs in this span of 40 years. Paintings on Permanent display, Woman's Club of Hagerstown, and many religious themed paintings currently on display in several churches in the region.
I am retired as a portrait artist and teacher, but still do private critiques for local artists. You can find my work at the Washington County Arts Council and the Mansion House Gallery.
